Full description

Royal Air Force, 1946 - 1949, Royal Air Force Aerial Photographs (Aerial Photograph). SDV342938.

Earthwork visible on the Royal Air Force 1946-49 aerial images. The earthwork may represent a small hillslope enclosure dating between the Neolithic and Iron Age period. The hedge respects the curving ditch along the northsouth-western boundary and the ditch making up the rest of the enclosure is also clearly visible.

Environment Agency WMS, 1998-2016, LiDAR DTM data JPEG image (1m resolution) (Cartographic). SDV360208.

Earthwork visible on Lidar imagery. The ditch on the north-eastern side is particularly prominent as is the northsouth-western boundary but this later part may represent part of the former field boundary rather than the enclosure ditch. The rest of the ditch which makes up the enclosure is not as visible as it is on the 1940s Royal Air Force Image.

Kaye, S., 2018, Prehistoric Enclosure, Longham Down (Interpretation). SDV361840.

Lidar shows roughly half of the remains of a possible prehistoric semi-circular enclosure on Longham Down near Lydford. The southern ending is abutted by a later wall which continues southwards before turning westwards and following the top of the topographic scarp.

An approximate diameter across the enclosure is 75 metres. There is an outer ditch (depth now 20 - 30 cm) from which the rampart rises approximately 1 metre. Late-19th century mapping shows that the western side of the enclosure formed part of a field boundary or bank.
