Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 5m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the east of South Knighton, Bickington. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the southeast facing combe slope, occupying an area of approximately 1.55 hectares. The banks coincide with orchards depicted on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and on the OS First Edition 25-inch map of the late 19th century. Aerial photographs of 1946 show that the northern orchard has been completely cleared of trees, whilst the orchard to the south remains covered in trees on recent aerial images of between 2015-17. The earthworks are interpreted as possible post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks for these orchards, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage.
