Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 4m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1951, off Howton Road, Newton Abbot. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the northeast facing combe slope, occupying an area of approximately 1.30 hectares. The banks coincide with land parcels 283 and 302 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Home Orchard’ and ‘Three Corners Orchard’, respectively, on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. The earthworks are therefore interpreted as possible post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks for these orchards, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. By 1951, the orchard trees have been partly thinned out and have been completely cleared by 1964. Aerial imagery captured in 2018 shows the area has been levelled in advance of development.
