Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 5.5m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1949 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Blatchford Farm House, Teigngrace. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned across and parallel to the contours of the southeast and northwest facing combe slopes, occupying a combined area of approximately 2.90 hectares. The banks coincide with land parcels 399 and 400 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Fields Orchard’ and ‘Higher Long Orchard’, respectively, on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. Orchards are also shown in this location on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century. This supports the interpretation the earthworks represent possible post-medieval or 19th century orchard tree planting banks, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchards remain moderately covered with trees up until 1969, although have been almost completely cleared by 1986 and the western-most orchard has been destroyed by Ringslade Clay Works. Fruit trees are possibly still extant within the orchard at Blatchford Farm House to the north on aerial imagery of between 2015-2017.
