Emafu excavation in 1987, in advance of its removal revealed a small circular pit circa 0.50m deep into the n half of which the stone was set without any substantial packing. Its total length is 1.86m, with 1.34m above ground. No related features were located (pye).

TIVERTON GAZETTE, 1987, Ancient Stone Gives Way to Link Road (Article in Serial). SDV60230.

A prehistoric stone on beaple's moor has been removed from the line of the north devon link road. The three-cornered stone is believed by local archaeologists to be 3,000 to 4,000 years old. The transplantation of the stone was made by tarmac construction workers. The stone was eased gently out of the ground. It was then wrapped in a protective tarpaulin and transported in the front of a mechanical digger to its new resting place a few hundred yards west.

Egging Dinwiddy, K., 2017, Excavation of a Medieval Farmhouse with Adjacent Droveway, at Beaple's Moor Cross, Knowstone, 137 (Article in Serial). SDV361981.

The Knowstone (boundary stone of a man named Knutr or 'Knut's Stone' (citing Gover et al, 1932, 340) used to mark the junction between three ancient routes. Stone was relocated in the 1980s during the construction of the A361.
