Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Sub-oval and irregularly shaped pits, between 5m to 28m in length, are visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the southwest of Higher Staplehill, Newton Abbot. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the available 19th century mapping, although earthworks labelled as ‘Old Quarries’ and a ‘Quarry’, as well as a structure of an ‘Old Limekiln’ (MDV20357) are shown within the surrounding area on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of the late 19th century and which are likely associated. The earthworks are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or early 19th century quarries which had likely passed out of use by the mid-late 19th century.
