Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (AI&M) (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 3.5m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Mainbow Farm, Newton Abbot. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the northeast and southeast facing combe slopes, occupying an area of approximately 0.55 hectares. The banks coincide with land parcel 343 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is also shown in this location on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century. This supports the interpretation the earthworks represent possible post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks of this orchard, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchard remains moderately covered in trees on aerial imagery taken in 2018.
