Parallel earthwork ridges were visible under moderate tree cover on aerial photographs of 1930, over circa 0.9 hectares of a plot to the east of Culver House, south-east of New Exeter Street, Chudleigh.
The closely spaced banks are on average 6 metres wide and are aligned cross-contour. They are interpreted as banks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within an orchard.
The plot in which the banks are visible is depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Chudleigh (Plot 1060, Endridge Orchard) and on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch First Edition map, one of many in the burgage plots of Chudleigh at this time. The banks were therefore probably created prior to circa 1840.
The plot remained undeveloped, although cleared of most tree cover into the late 1990s but was subsequently developed for housing and the banks consequently destroyed.
