Name:Possible orchards north-west of Brimley Corner, Chudleigh

Summary

Ridges were visible on aerial photographs of the 1970s onwards and images derived from lidar data as earthwork banks in two plots to the north-west of Brimley Corner, Chudleigh. Parallel earthwork ridges were visible on aerial photographs of the 1970s onwards and images derived from lidar data, over an area of circa 4.4 hectares, across two adjacent plots north-west of Brimley Corner, Chudleigh. The plots border the course of the Kate Brook to the north-west.
The closely spaced banks are 8 metres wide on the southern plot and to 12 metres wide in the northern, and are aligned obliquely cross-contour, on three orientations, towards the watercourse.
Although broader than most, they closely resemble banks commonly seen within orchards, made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil for fruit tree planting. However, the plots in which the banks are visible are listed as under arable cultivation on the Tithe Map for Chudleigh (Plots 840 and 950). As such, the banks either relate to former orchards cleared prior to the 1840s or were made to improve drainage into the Kate Brook prior to this date.
