Parallel ridges circa 5 metres wide and aligned cross-contour on the south-west facing slopes to the south-east of Bellamarsh Barton, Kingsteignton were visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
The visible earthworks fall within a plot listed as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Kingsteignton (Plot 40). The plot remains depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch First Edition map.
The banks are interpreted as earthworks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within an orchard of probable post-medieval to early 19th century date. The 19th century map evidence might support the interpretation that the banks predate circa 1840.
The banks probably post-date possible tin mining activity immediately to the south-east and may overlie some associated extractive features.
