A curvilinear ditch and bank are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as a cropmark and earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2013, on the south- east facing slopes north of Towerhill Lane, Ideford.
The ditch measures 4 to 8m in width and is circa 230m long. Traces of a narrower bank can be seen on the north-west edge of the ditch.
The visible earthworks correspond with a field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Ideford, but not the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map.
The earthwork and cropmark are therefore interpreted as the remains of a former field boundary of probable medieval origin that was removed between circa 1840 and 1880.
