Parallel earthwork ridges were visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as closely spaced earthwork banks in a plot east of Whiteway Barton, Kingsteignton. The visible earthworks are circa 7 metres wide and are aligned cross-contour. The banks probably correspond with a plot listed as Birdland Orchard on the Tithe Map for Kingsteignton (Plot 591). The plot remains depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map but no the Second Edition map.
The banks are interpreted as earthworks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within an orchard of probable post-medieval to early 19th century date. The 19th century map evidence might support the interpretation that the banks predate circa 1840. The orchard was probably cleared between circa 1880 and 1904. The banks are not visible as earthworks on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2015 and have probably been levelled.
