At the west end of a ridge known as Tor Rocks was a field, the surface of which had produced a number of worked flints, neolithic and bronze age arrowheads and some pottery sherds collected by Guy Belleville.This concentration of finds led him to suspect that there might be a Neolithic-Bronze Age habitation site in the vicinity. In advance of development a short exploratory excavation took place on 1 June 1958. The south-westerly slope of the field was broken by a slight, gently curved bank which was thought to be the remains of a rampart or wall - surface finds had concentrated here . One trench was sited along the ridge and a second at right angles to it. Soil cover was only 6-9inches deep above the natural, Middle-Upper Devonian Limestone, which was highly dolomitized. One small flint was found on the surface but none in excavation, only much modern pottery. No indication of a habitation level was observed.[1][2][3]
