The Church of St John, Montpelier Terrace, was first built in 1823 as a chapel of ease in Greek revival stylei n a prominent position overlooking the harbour and cut into the hillside. It was rebuilt on larger scale by G E Street 1861-73 with a tall nave, aisles and lower chancel in response to the rising population of Torquay. Constructed mostly in limestone with some ham stone for variation; the interior contains 117 pillars of dark limestone with coloured mosaics on the font and pulpit. The rare complete immersion font was carved from a single block of oreston marble ; the rich use of ironwork typical of Street. The interior with polychromy of polished devon marbles; east and west windows by Morris and Co, to designs of Burne-Jones. The tower with saddleback top and pinnacles was added by A E Street 1884-5. The lady chapel was decorated by J.D. Sedding 1888. [1][2][3]
