Full description

Torbay HER record (SMR record). SDV361984.

The site of one of the two Domesday Manors of St Marie Cherche; the one which may be identified as St Marychurch proper was the Count of Mortain's. Domesday Book records that Richard son of Thorulf held the manor from the Count, it's tenant-in-chief - Ordwulf held it TRE - paying rent for 1 hide. Land for 4 ploughs; in lordship 2 ploughs used with 3 slaves; and 2 virgates. [1]

The original extent of manor may also have included the lands that made up that of Bishop Osborn's (SX96NW/51) identified as at Combe Pafford, which may have been carved out of the original manor, and presented to the monks of Exeter when the see moved form Crediton. [2] The manor of Aecclesia Sanctae Mariae was one of the manors recovered by the last Saxon Bishop, Leofric and was in the hands of his successor at the time of domesday.[3] Later descents up to 1244 are discussed by Reichel. [4] The lands of the manor are part of the group of 8 or 9 manors which approximately made up the Borough of Torquay as it was in 1965. [5]

The caput of the manor has not been definitively identified but is most likely to be within the vicinity of the parish church.
