Full description
Torbay HER record (SMR record). SDV361984.
A series of, tear-shaped quarries; stretch over 550m w-e, from the rounded west end at SX86635914 to the 'point' of the tear at SX87195922. Bounded by Yalberton Road to the south and the series of Industrial estates to the north.
An enclosure award for Yalberton Tor [1] dated 1864 is represented on the OS 1864 County Series 1:2500 [contained on a Torbay HBSMR GIS layer] as separate land parcels: 1455, 1457, 1458, 1460, 1461, 1464, 1411 and 1466. Within the land parcels two "Quarries" and two "Old Quarries" are depicted.[2] Both quarries and 'old quarries' appear on later OS County series maps, 1902 & 1933. Associated are a series of 4 limekilns and an engine house.
The west end is the site of the modern working quarry Yalberton Quarry.[3]
