Full description

Torbay HER record (SMR record). SDV361984.

Imported from Torbay HER

Ellis, A.C., 1930, Historical Survey of Torquay, p.470 (Monograph). SDV362462.

Torquay racecourse was established in the 1880s; photos of the 'Petitor Races' c.1890 survive. Its extent, and the grandstand, can be clearly seen on the OS County Series 1:2500 first revision/second edition of 1902. By the next revision in 1933 (both editions are contained as GIS layers within Torbay Council's HBSMR) the southern extent of the track had been removed and laid out some metres further north in order to release land on which the club house (of the golf club) and 32-38 Petitor Road were built. The Torquay and South Devon Golfcourse having opened on the raceourse on 11 March 1910.

Racing did not restart after World War II, the golf course remains.
