New Quarry was one of a number of quarries exploiting the most northerly outcrop of Devonian limestone in Torbay, established around 1860, when Long (SX96NW/69) and Comfort Quarries are shown on the First Edition OS (surveyed 1861-2) as disused; hence its name.The outcrop of Devonian limestone, bounded by Permian sandstones and breccias to the north at Oddicombe and slates, shales and grits to the west and south at Anstey's Cove, was extensively quarried from the early 19th century to cater for the urban expansion of Torbay.
