One of a number of quarries c.1800, exploiting the most northerly outcrop of Devonian limestone in Torbay. Recorded on the OS as Walshill Quarry in 1861and in 1904; but as Babbacombe Quarry by 1933 with a miniature rifle range in the worked out southern half; by the 1950s an Army training centre hut had also been put up. This is the largest and most southerly of the series of quarries on the northwestern side of the outcrop bounded in the main by Babbacombe Road, west of Walls Hills where the Devonian Slate, shales and grits begin.
