Full description
Torbay HER record (SMR record). SDV361984.
On the OS County Series First Edition 1:2500 surveyed 1862 a natural stream is shown issuing forth from a point at the head of the valley just north of Lower Westerland (The Old Farmhouse) SX86896 62335. The watercourse continues along the valley floor towards Paignton; The proposed Ring Road follows the natural topograhy which cuts across the stream just north of Cruel Cross.
This water supply was utilised in the medieval period by the Bishops of Exeter for their Palace and mill at Paignton. The water was brought from Westerland by gravitation, partly by way of an open leat and partly through underground culverts, travelling a distance of some 5 km. In the late nineteenth century Paignton's water supply was augmented by private works using the Westerland source and reservoirs were constructed near Blagdon- SX86403 61231. During fieldwork by EMAFU in 1992 it was noted that the stream had been partially canalised in the region of Cruel Cross. However, it was not possible to gain access to the southern two-thirds of the route, and consequently the extent of artificial leats or canalization elsewhere within the valley is uncertain.[2]
