Full description

Torbay HER record (SMR record). SDV361984.

Imported from Torbay HER

Turton, S.D., 1992, Archaeological Assessment of DCC Torbay Ring Road Stage 3, p. 3 (* Torbay Report - Interim/Research/Specialist). SDV362435.

A boundary between Marldon and Paignton follows the course of a stream and hedgebank orientated north-west to south-east at the bottom of the steep-sided valley from The Old Farmhouse in the north to Cruel Cross, along Higher Ramshill Lane, across Old Widdicombe Lane to the junction of Great Parks Road with King's Aish Road.

As Marldon itself was from early times included within the Manor and ecclesiastical parish of Paignton (held by the Bishops of Exeter until the Reformation) its church was only a chapel-of-ease until 1912. Later at least part of Marldon seems to have been contained within the sub-Manor of Loventor; though neither Marldon itself nor any of the settlements or villages within the parish, are mentioned in the Domesday Survey. It may be therefore more accurate to describe the boundary here as that defining the estates of Westerland and Blagdon, both at one times regarded as sub-manors of Paignton.
