Full description
Torbay HER record (SMR record). SDV361984.
The former breakwater quarry housed two tanks; established in the 1930s they are present on the 1933 OS County Series Third Edition, during the Second World War they housed 4 million gallons of aviation fuel. Pumped to the GWR branchline and transported to RAF stations the fuel was also used by locally-based MTBs. They fed subsidiary tanks which supplied fuel direct to the breakwater refueling facilities as well as a flamethrower installed as a final defence.
After World War Two the complex was used as a Royal Navy fuel store for a time. They were demolished in the 1980s. [1][2][3]
