Full description

Torbay HER record (SMR record). SDV361984.

The name 'Odicknoll', means 'Odda's knoll'. The manor of Odicknoll was given to Twynham Priory, Christchurch, Hampshire. Searches in the Christchurch and Hampshire Record Offices have so far failed to locate any document from which the name of the donor and the date of the gift might be discovered. Odicknoll was not mentioned in the Domesday Survey and the earliest reference is Odeknoll(e)' in the 1299 Assize Rolls.[1] followed in 1310 in the Register of the fees of Hugh Courtenay: 'Eggeneswell and Odeknoll which John de Ferrers and Reginald de Remmesbury hold (1 fee)' In the sixteenth century the estate passed back into secular hands. It may be noted that this place cannot be very far from the 'Oddingtore' of the Ipplepen Charter and the same man probably gave his name to both the tor and the knoll. [2]

The tithe map and award record the names of 'Odicknole House', 'Higher Garden' and 'Garden'.[3]

Odicknoll Manor is a long, two-storeyed limestone building with a slate roof which was formerly thatched. There are tow end stacks and one axial stack. The porch is open sided with a gable roof. There is a two-storey outshot and a very small one-storey outshot. The roof of the main outshot is slate of an older type than the main house. There is said to be an open hearth with a bread oven over it behind the kitchen wall. The site was visited on the 27 January 1980 and a detailed description of the building can be found on the worksheet.[4] There is also a walled garden and farm buildings.
