Full description

Phil Newman, 2001, Battery Gardens, Brixham, Devon: An Archaeological Survey, 3-4, Appendix 1, Pl. 2, plan (Report - Survey). SDV362290.

A granite cylinder 1.3m high, circumference 1.2, with metal fixing features on its top side - possibly for levelling screws - was used as the base for a siting instrument or range finder for use with the mid-19th century practice battery. Six lines of lettering are cut into the stone:

DOOR ON MOLE (possibly an Azimuth RO)

RISE AND FALL OF THE TIDE 10FT
