Hengrave House built 1866 by William Kitson (the Younger) and named after the Suffolk village from were the Kitson family were domilciled in Henry VIII's reign.
In January 1924 Hengrave House was offered by Major R P Kitson to Torquay Borough Council with 15 acres for £8,000 to provide the site for a new Torbay Hospital. The site was purchased for the council by Ella Rowcroft as a gift in June 1924. Further land and charitable sums were offered during 1924-26r. The house was demolished and the hospital foundation stone laid 26 June 1926. The architect H Percy Adams completed the new work which was officially opened 17 November 1928
