- ATMOSPHERIC RAILWAY ENGINE HOUSE (XIX - 1847 AD to 1848 AD)
Full description
Torbay HER record (SMR record). SDV361984.
The Torre Pumping house was built for the South Devon Railway Company in 1847-8 by Brunel; constructed of local grey limestone rubble with some red sandstone and red brick dressings with a tapering campanile chimney in an italianate style . It has a corrugated asbestos roof, gabled at the ends. The atmospheric railway was projected to run between Exeter and Plymouth. The engine house was never used for its intended purpose; it and the Starcross engine house are the only complete ones remaining built for Brunel's atmospheric railway.[1][2][3]
It became Longpark Pottery, circa 1883-1972, and in 2001 was the premises of Frank H Mann Ltd, fruit and vegetable wholesalers.[4]
