In 1839-40 Paignton Rectory was pulled down, and a building known as Croft erected on the site. The (?tithe) barn of the rectory, an early school and the Porters House were likewise replaced and a much larger school building was erected on its site. A plan of the church, school, barn, Potatoe (sic) house and 'Rectory Dwelling House' dated 31 Jan 1839 is attached to a document in the DRO (?); this part of Church Street is described as 'New Road from Torquay to Paignton Village'. The tithe map similarly shows the earlier configuration. A vicarage was built south of this new part of Church Street on the east side of Duck Street, north of the mill dam.

Small-scale evaluation work in 1999 revealed medieval (?)boundary ditches with 11-12th century pottery [2]

There are the sites of two former vicarages in Church Street, the second is now a brewery yard. [This appears to be the vicarage that stood on the corner of Princes Lane and Church Street. The first vicarage referred to may be this one or that which formerly stood on the north side of Church Street.]
