Imported from Torbay HER
Fox, A., 1961, Transactions of the Devonshire Association, p.64-5; fig 3 (Article in Serial). SDV362608.
A polished adze of tuff was revealed when an old ash tree was removed from the garden of Mapleholme in Priory Road, St Marychurch, Torquay. The rock cannot be localised; but it is a common neolithic tool. cf report in Proceedings of West Cornwall Field Club 1 (1953-4)90.
The blade is sharp but chipped at the corners, the butt is heavily worn and pocked; it appears to have been re-used as a pounder. The 'SW stone axe com' report no.1127 states that the dark brown tuff is composed of quartz, decomposed felspar, basalt or andesite, epidate, green horn-blende and turbid brown, nearly isotropic, glass - it cannot be localised..
