St.marychurch font. old saxon font with "figures of the rudest execution and grotesque character." this font, though now a bowl on a shaft, was originally a tub. in 1824 it was dug up from under the existing font, of which, inverted, it formed the base, the sculptured part of which now is the bowl being entirely buried. a drawing made by the rev. edward kitson shows that the font was of a tub shape, tapering towards the base. it is richly ornamented. seven panels formed of interlaced beaded rings enclose figure subjects. two of these panels represent hunters, two show the animals they are hunting, the westernmost are a harper and a dancing girl, the easternmost one is a dove.
