Between 1226 & 1232 William de Brewer gave Torre Abbey a spring: "The spring of St Petrox near the Kitchen in the Court-House [Manor] of Torre" but reserved the right to take for water for his own use, the stream issuing from the spring flowing through his own garden. The drinking fountain erected in 1867 and erroneously called 'St' Efride's Well, after the Anglo-Saxon efre for ever, probably represents one place of issue. [1][2]

The well also acquired a spurous reputation as a holy well. [3]
