The first mention of the mill - The 'Lord's mill', i.e., Lord of the manor's - is an indirect one in an escheat of 1279. An explicit quit-claim is recorded in 1351 (quoted by Walker). [1] The mill, or a successor, was still extant by 1608 when there was granted to one John Saunders "all that messuage or house and another house and dye mill lately erected and built at Flete within the tithing of Tormohun". In 1618 Thomas Ridgeway granted to John Sayle for £120 'certain mills in Fleete'. [2] The mill was fed through a mill pond by the river fleete; it was a large building, part stone and part wood construction, with slate and thatch roofing. against the wooden part of the building was an overshot mill-wheel. The mill was visited and painted by the Rev J B Swete in 1793. [3]

The fleet water mill was advertised for sale in 1808 and there is also a reference to its existence in 1820. [4] The mill was demolished in 1835 shortly after Union Street was established between the Cary and the Palk estates in 1827.The Union Hotel was established on or very close to the site of the mill. The remains of the mill are reported to have been found in 1964 during contractors' excavations for the International Stores on the north side of Union Street. one complete millstone and half of the second had done duty as a step at the now demolished union hotel. they were of dartmoor granite.
