Torbay HER record (SMR record). SDV361984.

In a deed of 1196 Roger De Cockington permitted the canons of Torre Abbey to take stones from "the quarry under the Tuyveldeclive in the eastern part from the Corvenasse [Corbyn Head]" but they were prohibited from taking millstones. Ellis cites this and includes a photograph from the west side of the head showing distinct and complete circular impressions in the permian sandstone rock about 3'6" in diameter [1] There are also circles marking out stones that were not removed; the mills of Cockington Manor were thus supplied with millstones. [2]

A visit by an OS Field worker on 21 November 1952 found no trace no trace of the circular cuts at lower level of cliff nor at upper level where gardens cover the rock strata. NB the rcoks in Ellis's plate 52 are captioned 'Livermead Rocks' which are c.400 m west of Corbyn's Head.

Millstone quarry on both sides of Corbyn's Head mentioned in deed of Roger de Cockingtone 1196. Traces of millstone extraction pits and marking out circles recorded on the side of the Head in 1930. No trace was found in 1952 nor during assessment.
