Irregularly shaped pits and mounds and linear incised channels are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, occupying an area of circa 3.50 hectares within Lower Teigngrace Heathfield Plantation, Teigngrace. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit or banked features shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of the late 19th century which shows the area as woodland and supports the interpretation that they had passed out of use by this time. The earthworks are interpreted as the extractive pits and spoil heaps of a medieval or post-medieval tin works or possible streamworks based on their similarity with earthworks of an extensive tin working site recorded to the west in Gavrick Copse, Pitt’s Plantation and Blacksticks Plantation (MDV61846).
Unattributed, 2021, Restoring Stover Park. Archaeological Surveys. Lidar Assessment, Area 5 (Report - non-specific). SDV366261.
Irregularly shaped pits and hollows identifiable to the south-east of the area are probably a western extension of tin workings recorded within Lower Teigngrace Heathfield Plantation.
Passmore, A. + Rainbird, P., 2021, Restoring Stover Park. Report on Archaeological Surveys., 11; Fig. 6; Plates 9-10; Appendix 1 (Report - Survey). SDV366260.
Irregularly shaped pits and hollows identifiable to the south-east of Area 5 are probably a western extension of tin workings recorded within Lower Teigngrace Heathfield Plantation. Walkover survey found these to be in part clear but irregular earthworks which appear to be a more subtle western extension of those present across the road to the east. The eastern group are not as well defined as the western discrete features.
