Name:Earthwork Banks within Stover Park

Summary

Linear banks within Stover Park interpreted as former 18th or 19th century parkland trackways with possible associated remains of an ornamental bridge are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1964 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.

Linear banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1964 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, within Stover Park, Teigngrace. The visible earthworks comprise two parallel and closely spaced banks which are east to west aligned and between 4-7m wide and 35m long, with a northwest to southeast aligned bank located to the north and an east to west aligned bank to the west. The earthworks do not correspond with any banked features shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century, or on later available historic maps, which offers support to the interpretation that they had passed out of use by this time. Whilst largely of uncertain origin, it is possible they represent 18th or 19th century trackways associated with Stover Park (MDV56726), a number of trackways being shown in this location on historic maps. The prominent nature of the two closely spaced banked earthworks could possibly form the eastern half of a former ornamental bridge spanning a stream shown in this location or a possible precursor to the foot bridge shown to the north on the First Edition OS map.

Curvilinear banks, possibly 18th or 19th century parkland trackways or walks, are identifiable as earthwor. Parallel banks might form the eastern half of an approach to a bridge spanning a stream shown in this location, possibly a precursor to the foot bridge shown to the north on the First Edition OS map.
Alternatively, the banks might be the remains of banks flanking ditches interpreted as former water channe. The earthworks appear to connect the Ventiford Brook, the north-east serpentine element of Stover Lake and a feeder channel as depicted on the OS First Edition map.

Associated with the parkland are linear banks interpreted as former 18th- or 19th-century parkland trackways with possible associated remains of an ornamental bridge.
Walkover survey identified curvilinear banks, possibly 18th or 19th century parkland trackways or walks. Parallel banks might form the eastern half of an approach to a bridge spanning a stream shown in this location, possibly a precursor to the foot bridge shown to the north on the 1889 Ordnance Survey 25” map. The foot bridge was located to the north, probably slightly upstream of the current heritage trail path. Until recently this path was carried over the stream on a causeway incorporating a modern pipe. This has partially collapsed and the footpath has been diverted. There is no evidence for the bridge or the associated track, although the current path on the northwest side of the stream is slightly sunken on its north side. There is a major east to west aligned ramp here, on the eastern side of the stream, but there is nothing corresponding on the opposite side of the deep gorge formed by the stream. To the north of the ramp is a north to south aligned former field bank. A second bank, not mapped from the aerial imagery, extends south on the east side of the stream to the south of the ramp. This follows the course of the stream and may represent a field boundary or wood bank, or an episode of cleaning out of the stream. Linear banks might be the remains of banks flanking ditches interpreted as former water channels. The earthworks appear to connect the Ventiford Brook, the north-east serpentine element of Stover Lake and a feeder channel as depicted on the OS First Edition 25” map. These are former field boundaries with flanking ditches on their east and north sides, mainly located in very dense woodland. The north to south aligned western bank extends south to the Ventiford Brook.
