Shallow oval and irregularly shaped pits, between 38m to 66m long, are visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, within Heathfield Plantation, Bovey Tracey. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the late 19th century Ordnance Survey First Edition map, although does coincide with an area of woodland on this map. The earthworks are interpreted as possible extractive workings of between medieval to 19th century date which had passed out of use when the area was given over to woodland by the late 19th century. The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover. A natural origin cannot, however, be discounted.
