HER Number:MDV124358
Name:Field Boundary or orchard bank west of Higher Burne, Bickington

Summary

A curvilinear bank, visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in the 1950s and on images derived from lidar data captured in 2013, is interpreted as the remains of a medieval field boundary, or possibly an orchard bank, that went out of use before the mid-19th century.

A linear earthwork bank, approximately 5 metres wide, is indistinctly visible on aerial photographs taken in 1951 and more clearly on images derived from lidar data captured in 2013. It fits into the field pattern depicted on the 19th century maps, which has been characterised as medieval in origin, and may be a relict field boundary. It is sited within a plot that was cultivated as orchard in the 19th century, but is wider than might be expected of a tree planting bank. It is not depicted on the Tithe map so any field boundary here probably fell out of use before the mid-19th century.
