Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 5m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Chudleigh Knighton, Hennock. The visible banks occupy a number of adjacent land parcels. They are closely spaced and are broadly aligned across the contours of the southeast facing combe slope, occupying a combined area of approximately 4 hectares. With exception of the southern two land parcels, the banks all coincide with orchards either depicted on the First or Second Edition Ordnance Survey maps of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The presence of orchards in this location supports the interpretation the earthworks represent evidence of possible 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The plots remain lightly planted on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1964, although have been completely cleared on aerial imagery taken between 1999-2000, with one of the land parcels having been developed for residential housing.
