Earthworks of linear, sub-oval and irregularly shaped pits, incised channels and banks are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, within Parke Wood, Kathleen Wood and Evelyn Wood, Bovey Tracey. The extensive earthworks are largely random in form and occupy an area of circa 13 hectares of southwest facing slope. Their character and form support the interpretation they represent the extractive pits, stream channels and associated spoil heaps of a medieval or post-medieval streamworks. Two of the pit features correspond with earthworks labelled as ‘Old Quarries’ on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century, which may suggest that either resources here were re-exploited during this time, or perhaps the earthworks were mis-interpreted as quarries when they were initially surveyed. Given their complexity and in places subtle nature, not all visible earthworks have been transcribed, but instead have been included within an extent of area polygon. They are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to dense tree cover. Further investigations, such as targeted trenching is recommended to help define the character of these earthworks.
