An earthwork pit, covering up to 90 metres in maximum visible extent, is visible to the north-east of Caton Cross on aerial photographs taken from 1969 and on images derived from lidar data captured in 2013. It is interpreted as a post-medieval quarry pit, perhaps for limestone extraction given the nearby limekilns and quarries depicted on the late-19th century maps (including Caton Quarry MDV60874). However the 19th century mapping records and depicts this area as orchard, indicating that extraction had ceased some time before the mid-19th century.
