Name: | Narrow ridge and furrow north of Colehayes Plantation, Bovey Tracey |
---|
Summary
Parallel linear earthwork banks, visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, resemble post-medieval or nineteenth century orchard banks, but are perhaps more likely to have resulted from deep ploughing.

Parallel linear earthwork banks, 3 to 3.5 metres in width, are visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. They are cross-hatched and aligned in two different directions. Their width is consistent with an interpretation as 19th century banks for fruit tree cultivation, but no orchard is depicted in this location on any of the available mapping, instead depicted as rough ground on the late-19th century maps. The area is described as furze and pasture in the tithe apportionment, and it is possible that the earthworks are instead a result of deep ploughing for drainage.
