Full description

Waterhouse, R., 2017, The Tavistock Canal. Its History and Archaeology, 363, 372, fig 10.72, 10.74, 10.81, (Monograph). SDV361789.

Bray's Shaft lies in the immediate vicinity of another shaft, probably sunk by the Canal Company's Mining Department in 1816-21 on Holming Beam North Lode. The dumps of both shafts have been combined, creating confusion in differentiating them, which is exacerbated by later 20th century quarry of their dump material to their north-west.
Bray's shaft is the southern of the two, with a part-filled mouth within a wire fence and a large pit, possibly for a V-bob, in the south-western edge of its misshapen dump. The unnamed mine shaft to the north-east is much more obvious than the tunnel shaft, with a large conical pit marking the site of the collapsed shaft-collar and well-preserved circular embanked horse engine track.
Earthwork plan of Bray's Shaft and associated features included in publication.
