Full description

Waterhouse, R., 2017, The Tavistock Canal. Its History and Archaeology, 363, 367-72, 378, fig 10.72, 10.74, 10.80-81 (Monograph). SDV361789.

Eight shafts were sunk on the line of the tunnel, of which seven were completed (Remfry's was aborted due to hitting an Elvan dyke 16 fathoms from the surface).
Williams' Shaft was 68 fathoms (124 metres) and was sunk between 1804-1811. It lies within Morwelldown Plantation and was a replacement for the abortive Remfry's Shaft, which lies a little to the south-west. This shaft has surviving lengths of well-preserved shallow flat-rod trenches on the northern side.
The shaft remains open for about 20 feet (6 metres) down to a false bottom. The partially collapsed collar of the shaft lies within an encircling bank on its low flat-topped dump, with remains of a circular embanked horse whim track to its south-west. A Second World War practice trench and the dump on a roughly east-west alignment. Earthwork plan of Williams' Shaft included in publication.
