  • VENTILATION SHAFT (Constructed, XIX - 1804 AD to 1811 AD (Between))

Full description

Waterhouse, R., 2017, The Tavistock Canal. Its History and Archaeology, 363, 373, 377, 379, fig 10.80 (Monograph). SDV361789.

Eight shafts were sunk on the line of the tunnel, of which seven were completed (Remfry's was aborted due to hitting an Elvan dyke 16 fathoms from the surface).
Two air shafts of small dimensions were sunk to about 7 fathoms (12 metres) each early in the tunnel driving process (1804-1807), close to the north and south portals. They have no names. Site of the northern air shaft shown on measured plan. Waterhouse does not include the other air shaft on plans.
The northern air shaft is capped at surface but can be viewed from within the tunnel. It was small but could have accommodated a single ladderway but appears to have been designed to take a stream of water from the surface, which drew fresh air with it, to draw out blasting fumes.
