Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Parallel earthwork ridges on average 7 metres wide were visible under light tree cover on aerial photographs of 1965, crossing the contours of the south-east facing slopes.
The plot in which the banks are visible is depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Dawlish (Plot 1577, Long Orchard). The banks were therefore probably created prior to circa 1840. Such banks are typically interpreted as made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within an orchard.
The orchard remained moderately planted into 1946 but all trees had been cleared from the orchard by circa 2006. The banks remain visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
