Site of the medieval High Cross, recorded in 1559, 1596 and 1789.

An exhibition which traces the history of Barnstaple High Street from Saxon times to the present day has been mounted by the local library. With photographs, newspaper cuttings, sketches and maps, it outlines the development of the street from South Gate (now more generally known as Youings Corner) to Mermaid Cross, where the old North Gate stood.

From High Cross to South Gate was Southgate Street. It was this street that Prince Charles (later Charles the second) stayed for a period druing the Civil War.

High Cross
The following references to the High Cross occur in Barnstable records, 1559…paid for mending the stocks at High Cross 9d…the stocks at High Cross, 1789…to be whipped from the Golden Lion door to the High Cross.
The fate of the cross is unknown.

The High Cross, which was pulled down in 1560, was repaired as late as 1544.

Site visit 15th October 1953. The junction of High Street and Cross Street is known as High Cross. No trace of a cross found.
