An earthwork survey by Exeter University revealed the remains of a Chinese water garden to the west of the house which was constructed in 1908. Early photos show that the garden formerly had a moated pagoda, oriental style bridge and boathouse.
The garden’s water supply was regulated by a sluice system and when the house became a school in the 1920s it was altered to become a swimming pool. Site now overgrown.

Hitchings, T., 2014, Poltimore Estate Heritage Sites, S100 (Un-published). SDV361001.

The swimming pool constructed in the 1920s or 1930s to serve the girl's school established at Poltimore House was sited down stream and outside of the Chinese Water Garden. Only parts of the stone-built dam are still visible in the stream.

Ordnance Survey, 2019, MasterMap 2019 (Cartographic). SDV362729.

Curved ponds and weirs shown.

The Chinese Garden was probably created in the early 1900s. It comprised a small island with ornate wooden bridges, a pagoda and a boathouse, and housed many waterfowl. It was turned into a swimming pool when the house became a girls school.
