Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 6m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1969. The banks are closely spaced and are aligned across and parallel to the contours of the southeast facing combe slopes. The earthworks correspond with land parcels 716, 730 and 731 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Little Ansteed Orchard’, ‘Middle Orchard’ and ‘Jack Park Orchard’, respectively, on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. They are still shown as orchards on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of the late 19th century. Orchards in this location supports the interpretation the earthworks were 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees having been established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The land parcels are sparsely covered in trees in 1946, although these had been almost completely cleared by 1969. The earthworks were not visible after this date and had likely been levelled when the area was incorporated into Dainton Golf Course during the later 20th century.
