Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Parallel earthwork banks, circa 5m wide, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the southwest facing combe slope, occupying an area of approximately 0.35 hectares. The banks coincide with land parcel 188 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Pound Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is also shown here on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of the late 19th century. The presence of an orchard in this location supports the interpretation the earthworks represent possible 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The plot is covered in trees on aerial imagery taken in 1946, although these have been almost completely cleared by 1999-2000.
