Linear cropmarks of ditches up to circa 3m wide and 140m long are visible on aerial photographs of 1978 defining possible rectilinear enclosures crossing a hill south of Cow Plantation. The cropmarks do not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey, nor are they in keeping with the character of the surrounding medieval field pattern.
The cropmarks are interpreted as possible evidence of ditched field boundaries or enclosures of later prehistoric to Roman date. Alternatively, they closely follow the edge of an outcrop of basaltic lava and may be geological in origin.
