Parallel ridges were visible as north-west to south-east aligned earthworks under moderate tree cover on aerial photographs of 1946. The closely spaced banks are on average 7 metres wide and are aligned towards a gentle north-east slope. They are interpreted as banks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within an orchard.
The plot in which the banks are visible is depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Newton Abbot (Plot 405) and the Ordnance Survey 25-inch first edition map. The banks were therefore probably created prior to circa 1840.
The plot is cleared of trees and the banks remain visible as subtle earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
